Using Electric Motors in Electronic Devices
If you own an electronic device that involves any type of mechanical movement, it is more than likely being powered by an electric motor.
You may need to use the electric motor in your projects as an electronics hobbyist. They are popular PCB components in electronics hobbying. A little education on the operation of small electric motors will help you when you need to use one. A more thorough understanding of the concepts of magnets, electricity and electromagnetic can also be gained during this education.

Electric Motor Basics
Six individual parts normally make up the basic electric motor
- Armature or Rotor
- Commutator
- Brushes
- Axle
- Field Magnet
- DC Power Supply
Magnets are what an electronic motor utilizes to create motion. Opposites attract and like forces repel according to the basic principles or magnetism. Motion is created when these forces attract and repel in the electric motor.
The armature, or rotor, is an electromagnet placed between the two poles of a permanent field magnet. Once the armature receives power from the battery connected to the brushes, the poled with like charges turn half away from each other. When the polarity of the armature once again switches, it turns another half turn.
This process is repeated over and over creating continuous motion of the armature. The axle then transfers that motion to other moving parts of the device powered by the motor.
How Electric Motors are Used in Daily Life
Today, electric motors are among the most common electrical non-digital devices. They are found in hundreds of everyday devices and appliances like these:
- Remote Control Toys
- CD Players
- Fans (large and small)
- Blenders
- Analog Clocks
- Electric Toothbrushes
- Hair Dryers
- Windshield Wipers
- Garage Doors
- Vacuum Cleaners
- … and many more!
While you likely don’t even realize it, there are so many different electronic devices in your home which rely on electric motors.

Understanding Motors & Circuitry
Circuit board connections are commonly made in electric motors. In fact, they are a circuit unto themselves when connected to a power supply. As a part of a printed circuit board, they can be controlled by switches and/or microcontrollers, making them perfect tools for adding mechanical motion to your printed circuit board and device designs.
