Three Simple Ways To Increase The Search Engine Relevancy Of Your Blog

I love using WordPress, not because it is just so incredibly easy to use, but for the sheer fact that when it comes to its capability with search engine optimisation, it is just so open for modification that it is uncanny. The strange thing here is that as a platform, even though it has been around for quite some time now, it still lacks some basic SEO functionality. That’s alright, because I am going to go over some of the basics today.

I do need to advise at this point that I do a fairly large amount of customisation to my blogs in the way of making them much more search engine friendly. Once you have finished reading this post, what I recommend that you do is learn how to copy and migrate WordPress blogs, so that you aren’t stuck doing this process time and time again. It is a very handy skill to have.

Lets start with a few basics. Plugins are essential, and there are many that you can choose from. The most basic of all plugins will be an SEO meta data plugin, much along the lines of All In One SEO, or Yoast SEO. Both plugins are free, and will allow you to use custom meta titles, and descriptions with all of your content. As this is the data that the search engines display when a user searches for key terms, this is absolutely vital.

Your next step should involve the installation of a plugin that will generate an XML sitemap for you. As most search engines have a webmaster service that allows for the submission of a sitemap, this is utterly important in every way possible, especially if you want to make sure that the search engines are aware of every change on your site. Whilst Yoast SEO offers this functionality out of the box, there are also a few other standalone plugins that will offer this functionality.

Last, and certainly not least, is the process of optimising your URL. This can be done within WordPress by changing your permalink settings so that they display the post title within your URL. You can also add the category, but for all intensive purposes, the post name should do. As it is just one of the major ranking factors in Google, having your main target keyword in your URL is a massive assistive factor that will help you rank better in the search engines.

I could go on for much longer about the different plugins and features of WordPress that you can use to your advantage to make your blog much more search engine friendly, that said, I would need to write a 36 page booklet to explain everything in detail. What I recommend is that you create a blog with your optimum settings, using what I have described here today, then create a copy that you can easily use on new domains. The ability to copy, and migrate WordPress installations to a new domain when needed is extremely powerful, especially when you are working with complex, and search engine optimised blogs.
