Vestas Sailrocket 2 defies Rob Douglas speed record (Surf Today)
Rob Douglas’ world speed sailing record will be challenged by Australian
sailor Paul Larsen, when his Vestas Sailrocket 2 hits the water of in Namibia,
Africa.
Larsen has been developing a hybrid hit-tech glider-boat with high hopes of
capturing Douglas’ achievement of 55.65 knots (104km/h). The Sailrocket 2 has
already sailed up to the 55.4 knots, but the record should be made on an
average speed over 500 metres.
Larsen believes there are many upgrades to be made in the futuristic sail
boat, so the world speed record can be beaten. The 41-year-old sailor is
trying to balance the rudder when speed hits 50 knots.
The team of developers is using the foils against the sail, in order to get
equilibrium. The Vestas Sailrocket 2 is trying to fine-tune the entire model
for the perfect winning formula.
