A destination guide to Malta by Chris Inman
Malta has been on the tourist radar for around 20 years. The weather during June and July is nearly always hot and with very little chance of rain, it has become really popular as a package holiday destination. Having joined the Euro in 20008 has also increased the appeal of the island country. Getting into the country is easy enough, with a range of budget airlines flying across and regular boats from Catania in Sicily.
While most people only consider Malta island when Malta is mentioned, there are two other islands, Gozo and Camino.
On offer is a range of water sports and beaches. It’s known for being good for diving. It’s a good place to learn to dive because of it’s warm water temperatures and transparent waters.
Malta also draws in the crowds because of it’s great night life. The majority of the best clubs are situated in Paceville in the St Julien’s area. there are many clubs catering to a wide variety of musical tastes here. As well as clubs, there’s also multiplexes and bowling alleys.
The Tarxien temples are in a village in the centre of Malta. They are 4 megalithic structures which date back to between 3200 and 3600 BC. The primary function of these temples seems to be sacrificial rituals,as archaeologists have found flints and animal bones within the grounds. Currently part of a major conservation scheme, the temples stand to be a large tourist attraction in the future.
The old capital, Mdina has a whole host of sights to experience too.The Norman House is a well preserved medieval building built in 1495. The Mdina Cathedral Museum is one of the most outstanding religious museums in Europe, and there is the Cathedral of St Pauls.
