Different Parts Of An Eyeglass Prescription

Eyeglasses prescriptions are given to us by certified and licensed opthalmologists or optometrists. In identifying the eyeglasses or lenses that are ideal for a particular vision-impaired individual, these experts will perform a series of eye examinations. They will also be the ones responsible in entering the figures to the prescription right after the exams.

The following are basic parts of an eyeglass prescription:

DV – otherwise known as distance vision. It indicates the component of the eyeglasses that will boost the patient’s sight for objects that are far from him/her.

NV – also known as near vision. This one concerns the improvement of seeing things near the patient.

OV – oculus dexter or the value of your right eye. United Kingdom and other countries also use the term RE to signify right eye.

OS – oculus sinister. It indicates the status of the left eye of the patient. The abbreviation LE is also used by some optometrists to signify OS or the left eye.

OU – it means oculi uterque or it indicates the right and left eye.

Cylindrical – also known as CYL. The values inputted in this part are responsible in fixing astigmatic refractive errors. There will be either addition or subtraction of refractive powers in CYL.

Axis – the figures indicated in the axis tab are responsible in representing the proper angle in degrees of which the lenses are set in the frame. It goes hand-in-hand with the values of CYL.

Spherical – otherwise known as SPH. It is responsible in correcting refractive errors using either divergent or single convergent refractive powers.

Base – it is not usually used or it has left blank. It indicates the direction of the image displacement. Base works with Prism.

Prism – it is not that used just like Base. Figures to be entered in the prism indicates the need to correct imbalances of the eye muscles and related diseases.

Pupillary Distance – also called PD. Measured in millimeters (mm), PD calculates the distance between the two pupils. Interpupillary distance or IPD is the other term of PD.

Back Vertex Distance – BVD values indicate the distance between the frontal cornea and the back of the lens.

You should be aware that you can’t buy the perfect prescription specs for you if you don’t have your latest optical prescription. Estimating values could worsen your eyesight or worst, it will make you blind.
